(9 days after Miriam's b-day)

This is a collection of stuff that I and/or

my immediate family do, enjoy and/or participate in.

It includes vacations, projects, poems...whatever stuff we do!

I'm Daniel and I've got a lot to add.

We will be creating new stuff to add all the time.

Check back every month or so.  Have fun.

The First Ever
TreeHugger Floor

I just had the pleasure
of producing and then
installing the most beautiful
floor I've ever seen.

A tornado stopped off for a "daycation" at our tree farm where we live.  Pictured to the right is just one of several root mounds of uprooted large trees.   That's me doing the sobriety test.

 Tree-Hugging
Wood Floor Makers!

My parents bought their first sawmill 20+ years ago.  They dreamed of producing
an income from  their land.  Here is dad producing some of our first mixed species tongue & groove wood flooring.
Environmentally positive
& astonishingly beautiful.
Our first floor is pictured too.

The Barn Fix-Up and Family Vacation to Wisconsin are earlier installments in this narrative.   I'll add more about this adventure soon.

Wheela 2007
Our favorite blues festival for the last 3 years running.  2007 was amazing fun.

Check out the pictures.
Thanks Bruce and all those that help make this Blues Festivus for the rest such a great event!!!
As you can tell from the photo -
I'm one happy camper!

Hanging Rock State Park

It's just March 9th, 2008, but I'm already starting to think of our spring and summer getaways.  A close one is this mountain park near the Dan River.  The park has trails, waterfalls, camping, and a big lake with diving boards & canoes. Most all of the pictures are from last summer.

78 relatives and friends over for a feast.
Kids of all ages running everywhere.
Nature walks, hayrides and of course

Springing the Blues Festival

in Jacksonville, Florida

Free Blues concert with great talent on the beach in Jacksonville, Florida.  You don't have to tell me twice.  We went and loved it.

We had fun if you couldn't tell.

Lineup & festival pictures from 2007.

PUERTO IGUAZU....LARGEST WATERFALLS IN THE WORLD!!!

During out last visit to Argentina, we went to Puerto Iguazu in northern (the hottest part) Argentina.  I can't describe it...just check out the pix & videos.

A pretty Birdbath base.

Not the most permanent solution but unique, fitting and pretty.  Very easy.

Click the picture or the title above for some simple instructions for making your own.

Aripuca Park

in Northern Argentina.

Miriam & I went to amazing places in Argentina and this is of them.  A wood preservation park that "rescues" discarded trees cut by the overzealous lumber industry and turns the wood into useful and beautiful products and artistic expressions.  A relaxing and beautiful escape.

Renovating part of a very

very very old barn to be a shop.

The picture on the right is after we poured the floor (months into the project). This is my cement crew.  Good looking bunch, huh?  Good workers too.

Our Crazy Louisiana

Swamp Tour

Gators that eat marshmallows, snakes slithering side us, deadly lightning spiking, metal boats burning out, exotic pheasants preening....

Check it out for yourself.  Our simple day excursion during the New Orleans Jazzfest  three day break gets dangerous.

A New Day

A poem dedicated to

my Grandma Effie Baird.

Added March 22, 2006

Excerpt:

Today is a new day,

A new beginning...

Not  an end.

A chance to strengthen ties,

renew lost contacts,

send the Love

we sometimes forget to send...

Dad's Ode to Fungi

A toadstool treat from dad.

Picture contributed by my sister, Elizabeth.

Added October 5, 2006

Button cap and stool of toad

Lace the dewy wooded road.

Stem of life or chair of death

Feed the soul or steal the breath

Puffball box of devil's snuff

Hiding in the meadow rough,

Still awaits a tramping foot

To let fly its pregnant soot.

Wheeling Blues Festival 2006

The festival was August 10, 11 & 12th.  Once again the best blues festival we attended this year.  One of the best lineups, the best venue and some damn fun people.

Notes on Dot Music -

King Dot of Dotville

outlaws music!

Daniel's story of what happens when music is banned in a little kingdom called Dotville.

Excerpt

They burned all the tapes, cd's -
and the racks.
Nothing was safe...
not even 8-tracks!

Soon, when this started,
in fact...the very same day,
a few unscrupulous businessmen
began to plan a new way...

Building Double Z doors.

Simple, beautiful, inexpensive & very effective door design.

We have ones on our farm that must be 150 years old or older.  Who can argue with that kind of success?

Hauling, Cutting, Storing, Drying Lumber

Some videos and pictures of ways we  haul, cut, store & dry lumber.  First added July 18, 2006.

In Progress.  I will be adding to this as we start making wood flooring and getting even further into that kind of stuff.

Flower Box Makeover

Our old flowerboxes looked like a train wreck.  Miriam had been asking for new ones for a while. So...one weekend recently I got some cedar boards we had laying around and made new ones.

The process turned out to be so simple,  I thought I should share it with others.

Family trip to Spring Green, Wisconsin

We went for 5 days and lived in a modern log cabin with Jim Berkemier (a rebel with a cause).  He teaches landowners how to produce and install mixed species flooring as well as forest conservation and a host of other things.

An amazing time.  We learned so much.

Such a beautiful trip.

Blues & BBQ in the

Beautiful Blue Ridge.

Miriam and I went to Roanoke, Virginia for the Blues.  Made some new friends, danced, saw Tinsley Ellis for the first time.  Mel Melton and the Wicked Mojos showed up too.  Even the Big Hurl of Fat Daddy (pictured to right) - made an appearance!

Added Aug 22, 2006.

Make a mixed species cutting board.

While we were in Wisconsin, this was a little night project that I would work on after the day of learning about flooring production was over.
